Manchester United vs Everton match review:
Goodison had become a place United didnt enjoy from last few visits. But this time after Arsenal’s defeat there was buzz around for some players to come in. Manchester United team to play: De gea, Darmian Jones Smalling nd Rojo behind with Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger sitting in midfield with Mata Herrera Martial and Rooney on top. Some people would argue with Rooney on top and Martial on left but I would have done the same if I was Mr. LVG.
United started the game very positively unlike the last game where they looked lost and short of pace and lost the game in first 19 minutess. They showed authority with both midfielder up for job to protect and distribute the ball around and control the pace of the game. First goal for Schneiderlin beautifully taken after a good chest control from Smalling. Second goal was one typical of United with awareness, pace and an easy finish from Herrera. Second half United took around 10 mins to settle but within those 10 minutess Everton looked to get something and they might have if not for De gea to make one brilliant stop to deny Lukaku. Again United capitalised from an Everton mistake and good finish from Rooney who needed that goal most out of all the players on pitch assisted by Herrera. United finished the game comfortably 3-0 and broke the hoodoo of Goodison which saw them loose on last three visits.
Tactical Approach: There were few changes made by LVG with Jones, Rojo and Herrera coming into the side. Then there was the in-form Martial starting on the left side and Rooney on top. Most would have argued on that decision of putting Martial on left and Rooney as striker after his poor form but in my opinion 3 changes by Van Gaal defined how comfortable United were at Goodison. First putting Jones to partner Smalling. Jones strength is his speed and physicality which makes him better option then Blind who himself is very intelligent but will get beaten by tough and pacy strikers like Lukaku. Jones and Smalling won almost every duel against Lukaku and special mention must be made of Smalling who is a completely different player. His approach in every dimension has improved. He is fast, he is tough, his awareness, decision making and defending has improved tremendously and in my opinion is untouchable in current United squad and best in England. If one sending off can bring this much change then i guess Phil Jones should take one too. Rojo at left back had his best game and can make that left back squad his while Luke Shaw recovers. Second important change was Herrera who scored one assisted one and without a doubt was Man of the match. He provides that extra speed going forward and support to midfield while defending. He is the catalyst combining well from one box to the other. Herrera should start lot of games from here in that hole behind striker as he gives United that extra pace which clearly helped Rooney score. His decision making is quick and he gets into those spaces which can trouble defenders. The last change made was putting Martial on left which again was master stroke.Martial has such a light feet and he always keeps his head up unlike Memphis. Putting Martial on left neutralised everton attack from that side and kept Coleman quiet. Coleman is brilliant going forward but Martial was even better which kept Coleman quiet. One half time change of bringing in Lingard for Mata was again great one as Mata struggled and Galloway was to quick for him. Lingard was quick to link up play going forward and supported Darmian while defending.
Overall United had one of the best games of the season so far specially after that defeat at Emirates but as a fan i like watching my team dominate, well organised, quick on the ball, counter attacking and winning games in style.
