Looking back at former EPL stars who have come from the Dutch Eredivisie and the impact they had in the EPL, we are beginning to think united wonderkid wasn’t built for the EPL. Players like Luis Suarez, Ruud van Nistelrooy and former teammate Giorginio Wijnaldum have made significant impact for their teams. Memphis on the other seems to only find his feet in European competitions.

Having scored 2 stunning goals and providing an assist for a third goal in the first leg of United’s Champions League playoff against the lowest ranked team in the UCL draw with United winning 3-1, one would have thought he had opened the floodgates for more goals. Memphis notched an assist in the second leg of the UCL draw with another impressive showdown on the night.

The Barclays premier league on the other hand hasn’t been too friendly for the United No 7. Leaving PSV on a high resulted in him being compared to EPL stars like the Belgian Maestro of Chelsea, the Chilean Phenomenon Alexis Sanchez of Arsenal and the English Starlet Raheem Sterling currently of Manchester City before the commencement of the season, it’s sad to say the Dutch Wonderkid hasn’t lived up to expectation.

United European Memphis vs. PSV European Memphis

There isn’t much difference between Memphis Depay’s stats of his final European campaign in PSV and that of his United campaign. Having amassed a total of 3 goals in 6 games for PSV, he can clearly boast of having scored once every 2 games for PSV. However, that is the same case with United having scored 1 goal in 2 games. His only goal coming against his former club.

With an average of 24 successful passes and 21 forward passes per 90 minutes for United, they can clearly boast of a more attacking and conservative Memphis as compared to 21.17 and 17.83 successful passes and forward passes respectively for PSV.

The Dutch team can however boast a more defensive player with him winning 0.5 tackles per game as compared to not winning a single tackle for United. He has however won more aerial duels and committed more fouls for United with 1 each and 0.17 and 0.83 PSV on the average.

EPL Memphis vs. Eredivisie Memphis

On the domestic basis, considering it has been only 9 matches into the season, Memphis’ stats for his last season for PSV is ahead of his debut season for United by a million miles. The Dutch team can boast of a more offensive and a more defensive domestic Memphis. He has so far scored an average of 0.12 goals for United compared to his 0.73 goals per game for PSV.

Despite having made more forward passes and less backward passes per game for PSV, he has a higher number of successful passes per 90 minutes for United. He has made an average of 15.88 and 18 forward passes and backward passes respectively for United compared to his 19.40 and 12.13 for PSV. He has so far completed 27.62 passes for United compared to his 23.60 for PSV last season and also created 1.83 chances per game compared to his 0.5 chances for United.

Defensively, Memphis won 0.67 tackles per game, 0.27 aerial duels per game and committed 0.63 per game for PSV compared to his 0.62, 0.25 and 0.88 respectively for United.

United fans have a lot to look forward to from Memphis provided he is able to reach his form of last season else he faces a possibility of having the same fate as former Madrid man Angel di Maria. With the facilities at his disposal at United, he can surpass his former self and live up to the “Next Ronaldo” tag for United. Many say he has fallen victim to the United No 7 curse and its up to him to prove everyone wrong
