After a drab night in Newcastle, the Tyne side were the ones who came out victorious after putting up a good side against a good Liverpool side. Liverpool who were without the services of Mamadou Sakho and Emre Can failed to make an impact in the whole game after playing a full 45 minutes with neither of the goalkeepers being tested.

Liverpool started the game with much zeal as they hoped to pick up a maximum of 3 points at the St. James’ Park. Newcastle also had to put up a good show in front of their home fans. They were very resilient at the back and won many of their duels with their main focus being the Belgian power house Christian Benteke.

Both teams showed little danger going forward ending the first half with no shot on target with Liverpool creating 3 chances and Newcastle, 1. The Merseyside team tried to use Benteke’s aerial threat to their advantage by putting in 15 crosses in the first half to no avail.

Disappointed Klopp

The second half was similar to the first until Jürgen Klopp replaced Benteke and Firmino with Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge. Liverpool started attacking more and exposed their defense to the counter attacking game of Newcastle.

Moussa Sissoko played in a running Giorginio Wijnaldum from the right hand side of attacked whose shot took a wicked deflection of the legs of Martin Skrtel and found its way into the net. After the goal, Liverpool moved more men forward to look for an equalizer. Chancel Mbemba and Fabricio Coloccini showed more resilience by keeping an eye on the Liverpool attackers who tried to put in more crosses. Alberto Moreno who was narrowly called offside beat the Newcastle goalkeeper with an audacious chip.

Jordan Ibe was replaced by Divock Origi in attempt to salvage something from the match. Newcastle also brought on more attacking options through Florian Thauvin and Yoan Gouffran. But it was that man, Wijnaldum who was played in on goal by Moussa Sissoko and he was able to dink the ball just over a rushing Mignolet to secure the win for their 3rd win of the season and Liverpool’s 4th loss of the season.
