The second day of the of the Knockout stages started with France vs Ireland, followed by Germany vs Slovakia and Belgium vs Hungary.
Griezmann Shines as France leapfrogs Ireland
A tough game that started in a surprising manner; just few minutes into the game and Ireland was awarded a penalty after Paul Pogba fouled Shane Long in the penalty box, Brady steps forward and slots it in from the spot as Hugo Lloris went the wrong way.
Ireland stepped back and played more cautiously, giving France chance to attack and explore. France had several opportunities but couldn’t convert them as the Ireland won the first half.
Youngster, Kingsley Coman replaced Ngolo Kante in the second half and France looked for more options in the final third. Things started to get interesting as they looked more dangerous upfront, Ireland on the other side were depending on counter but nothing seems to be working for them.
France equalized in the 58th minute after Sagna’s cross met Griezmann’s head who bullet’s it into goal. Things got better! In less than two minutes, Antoine Greizmann added his second goal after Giroud header landed in front of him and the Atletico striker slots it home.
Ireland became frustrated and decided to find options upfront but created more space for France to counter, Griezmann was the last man running towards the goal when he was tripped by Duffy who was shown the red card by the referee.
France had the opportunity to add to their lead but were unlucky. The Cup Host scale through to the quarter finals with a 2-1 win and they will wait to see their next opponent as England play Iceland on Monday.
Germany stroll pass Slovakia
As expected, Germany dominated the game in the opening minutes as Slovakia sit back and wait for a chance to counter.
Germany got their first goal when Sami Khedira’s header was tipped off to the corner by the Slovakian keeper. Kroos delivered the corner which was headed out and Boateng who was unmarked at the edge of the penalty box tried a volley that had a slight deflection before entering the bottom corner; with that effort he scored his first goal for Germany.
Germany was awarded a penalty in the 13th minute when Martin Skrtel pushed Mario Gomez who was in a position for a header- the referee called for a penalty and booked Skrtel. Ozil stepped forward to take the penalty and saw his effort saved by the Slovakian keeper who went the right way and punched the ball away.
Ozil missed another golden opportunity after Gomez’s semi header met him, unmarked, he smashed the ball the wrong way.
Germany scored their second goal courtesy of Gomez. Draxler beat a Slovakian defender, made a superb run and passed the ball further in the penalty box which met Gomez who pokes it home. Germany won the first half, thanks to Boateng and Gomez.
The second half started and both teams struggled in the first minutes of the second half. Kucka’s attempt was saved by Manuel Neuer.
Germany got their third goal when Draxler volleyed Kroo’s cross that flicked to his part.
Germany strolls to the Quarter final, they await their next opponent as Italy faces Spain.
Superb Belgium Outclass Hungary
Belgium were superb against Hungary, they scored four as they find themselves in the quarter finals.
Both teams were attacking each other in the first minutes of the first half, no one wants to sit back and watch the other dominate.
Belgium took the lead in the 10th minute when Kevin De Bruyne’s met Aldewerield who was unmarked and he powers the header into the back of the net.
Hungary had several chance to take the lead but couldn’t finish them off. Captain Dzsudzsák went forward and tried Courtois but the Chelsea keeper made a comfortable save.
Belgium had another chance to double their lead when Kevin De Bruyne’s free kick thunders on the cross bar after a finger tip save from Kiraly.
Hungary’s Gergő Lovrencsics tried a long range shot that was unfortunately off target. Merten’s drilled shot was later saved by Kiraly as both teams went into the dressing room for the half time break.
Seconds into the second half, Hazard tries the keeper from outside the box but the 40yrs old Kiraly made another superb save as he punches the ball to corner.
Adam Pinter’s shot deflected off Aldewerield but Courtois made a superb a save and tipped the ball to the corner.
Belgium scored their second goal when Hazard made a superb run and crossed the ball into the penalty box, Batshuayi who replaced Lukaku was unmarked and the youngster smashed the ball into the net. He scored his goal just 1 minute and 34 seconds after coming on.
Hazard added another goal after making a fine run, cuts in and slots it to the bottom right.
Carrasco who replaced Mertens scored the last goal after a pass from Nainggolan.
Belgium win by four goals and are into the quarter final where they will face Wales who won Northern Ireland on Saturday.
