Gary Cahill claimed that referee Andre Marriner missed a foul that could be seen from the moon after Swansea City held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw in a thrilling and controversial match at the Liberty Stadium.

Chelsea led after 18 minutes through Diego Costa but Swansea turned the match on its head in the second half, with Gylfi Sigurdsson winning and scoring a penalty and Leroy Fer dispossessing Cahill to put the hosts in front.

Fer appeared to make contact with the back of Cahill’s legs twice before stealing the ball, but Marriner waved away Chelsea’s protests and only Costa’s 81st-minute overhead kick salvaged a draw for the Blues.

Shortly after the match an incensed Cahill tweeted a gif of the incident and Marriner’s reaction — later deleted from his account — and the England international laid out his grievances in greater detail when speaking to the media.

“It’s a clear foul,” Cahill told BBC Sport. “I’m frustrated. Come on, seriously! You could be sat on the moon and see it is a clear foul. I took the touch away from [Fer], he came through the back of me. It was clear as day and seeing it back has made me even more angry.

“It’s all fun and games for the fans isn’t it but it’s the players who suffer. That kills me and kills my team. We have dropped two points which is massive in this league.

“Look at my face! It’s incredible. I said to the referee there’s three of you that can see that. There were two fouls, and between the officials they have said that they couldn’t see it. For me that is incredible.”

The draw leaves Chelsea second in the Premier League table after four matches, two points behind leaders Manchester City. Conte’s men host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Friday.
