Barcelona moved ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, for 24 hours at least, after beating Leganes 5-1 on Saturday.
Lionel Messi scored a brace, with Luis Suarez, Neymar and Rafinha also on the scoresheet, as Luis Enrique’s side carried their free-scoring run into La Ligaafter thrashing Celtic 7-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Messi opened the scoring in the 15th minute before setting up Suarez for a second, and the match was effectively over as a contest when Neymar struck just before the break.
Messi’s penalty made it 4-0 on 55 minutes before Rafinha produced the goal of the game with a curling effort from outside the box.
Leganes pulled back a late consolation, the first ever top flight goal at their Butarque stadium, through Gabriel Appelt Pires’ free kick.
Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres both scored twice as Atletico Madridclaimed a 5-0 win over Sporting Gijon.
A day after manager Diego Simeone reduced the length of his contract by two seasons, Atletico produced a commanding performance as Kevin Gameiro scored in between two first-half goals from strike partner Griezmann.
Torres wrapped up a comprehensive victory in the second half as Atletico secured their second successive league success.
The win also saw Simeone’s side keep up the early pace on title rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid after a slow start to the campaign.
Nine-man Eibar secured a 1-1 draw with Sevilla.
For a second week in a row, Eibar fought back to earn points after having their goalkeeper sent off.
Sevilla were up a goal and a man when Yoel Rodriguez saw a direct red for fouling Carlos Correa a minute before half-time, but Eibar continued to create more attacks than Sevilla, and Pedro Leon levelled to cancel out Luciano Vietto’s opener in the 64th minute.
Eibar finished with nine men after Dani Garcia also earned a red card for an ugly foul on Vietto.
Last week, Eibar fought back to beat Granada 2-1 after goalie Asier Riesgo was sent off.
