Juventus full-back Patrice Evra has congratulated Barcelona striker Luis Suarez on his European Golden Shoe award.
Former Liverpool striker Suarez received an eight-match ban and £40,000 fine after the Football Association ruled that he had racially abused Evra during a game against Manchester United in 2011.
Suarez, who admitted using the word “negro” but insisted it was inoffensive in the context, subsequently blamed Evra, saying he incited the incident and was not as capable a Spanish speaker as he believed.
Evra said ahead of the 2015 Champions League final between Juve and Barca that he was happy to shake Suarez’s hand even if he would never be the Uruguayan’s “best friend” and, discussing the FA hearing, added: “I didn’t say to the judge that Luis Suarez is a racist person. I just say in that moment he [made] some racist comment.”
Despite their history, France international Evra sent his congratulations to Suarez after he collected the Golden Shoe award, having scoring 40 league goals for Barcelona last season.
He wrote in Spanish: “In my Instagram there is only love and never hate!!! Luis, you are a great player, the best number 9. Congratulations Luis. @luissuarez9”
He then added in English: “i love THIS game !!! Hahahaah”
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard also praised Suarez on Instagram, writing: “The best number 9 on the planet #mymate”
