Wayne Rooney became Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer in Europe with his first-half goal against Feyenoord in a Europa League group stage game on Thursday.

The former Everton man scored for the 39th time in continental competitions, when he chipped goalkeeper Brad Jones from inside the box after receiving a pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 35th minute.

The goal places the England international one ahead of Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy in Europe and one shy of tying the club’s all-time record tally of 249 goals in all competitions, held by Sir Bobby Charlton.
